Op 9 oktober a.s. houdt de VAEG haar jaarlijkse ledenvergadering. Zoals gewoonlijk hebben we een huishoudelijk programma en een inhoudelijk programma. We beginnen ditmaal met het inhoudelijke programma, een lezing door James Kennaway, assistant-professor bij de Faculteit Letteren.
Lezing: Models of the Brain in "Mind Control"
The idea of 'mind control' seems to be everywhere nowadays, from anxieties about digital manipulation online to conspiracy theories about 5G signals. This kind of thinking has recurred many times in the past two hundred years, from the work of Mesmer to Cold War Brainwashing panics. Models of how the brain works, especially ones that see it as a programmable machine of various kinds, have played a major role in these debates over the years. This talk will look at the relationship between conceptions of the brain and discussion of mind control.
